Thread Forming Taps

The Dormer MTT-X E097 powdered-metal steel thread forming tap has a round shank with a square end, chromium nitride (CrN) coating, and no lubricant grooves, and is used for cold-forming metric right-hand threads in ductile materials such as steel, titanium, nickel, and aluminum. It is suitable for threading through holes (extending through the workpiece) and blind or bottoming holes (with only one opening). The CrN coating provides a hard, low-friction coating, which reduces likelihood of material buildup at the tool’s cutting edge and improves edge sharpness. This tap is designed with no grooves to make it suitable for interrupted holes and for through holes in thin sections. Its modified bottoming chamfer has additional length to reduce chip load, add tool life in difficult-to-machine materials, and permit higher tapping speeds.

Right-hand threads are designed to tighten when a head or nut is rotated clockwise (the most common threading direction). Powdered-metal steel offers performance that approaches that of solid carbide tools but with the toughness and shock-resistance of high-speed steel. The round shank with square end helps to minimize rotation in the tool holder. This thread forming tap can be used in machines such as drill presses or lathes.

In the Dormer MTT-X E097 series, all taps have modified bottoming chamfers. This tap conforms to ISO 529 standards and can create threads to a depth two-and-a-half times its diameter. It is suitable for the 6HX tolerance class: 6HX exceeds the standard tolerance to increase tool life in tapping high-strength or abrasive materials that do not create oversize problems.

Taps produce internal threads in previously formed holes and can be used in machines (such as drill presses) or with hand tools. Common types of taps include hand taps, spiral point taps, spiral flute taps, thread forming taps, and pipe taps. Hand taps (straight-flute taps) collect chips in the straight flutes of the tool; spiral point taps push chips through holes ahead of the tool; and spiral flute taps pull chips back from the tip of the tool, up and out the hole. Thread forming taps, also known as cold forming taps, press rather than cut to create threads in a drilled hole, and no chips are created. Pipe taps create threads in pipes and pipe fittings. Each thread type designates a thread profile and each type is identified with an abbreviation. In the U.S. and Canada, the Unified Thread Standard is the dominant thread type, including UNC (Unified Coarse), UNF (Unified Fine), and NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads, among others.

Precision Dormer manufactures cutting tools under the following brands: Precision Twist, Dormer, and Union Butterfield. The company has locations around the world, and provides tools adhering to ANSI, NAS, and DIN standards.

Thread Forming Taps

The Union Butterfield 3306E(UNC)/3306E(UNF) uncoated, high-speed steel thread forming tap has an extended round shank with a square end, lubricant grooves, and a bottoming chamfer, and is used for cold-forming right-hand threads in ductile materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze, low-carbon steel, and leaded steel. It is available in two different ANSI thread specification standards: UNC (Unified Coarse) and UNF (Unified Fine). The bottoming chamfer makes it most suitable for threading blind or bottoming holes (with only one opening). The extension Rol-Form design is extra-long for extended reach, with lubricant grooves to improve coolant flow.

High-speed steel (HSS) is a common general-purpose steel for cutting tools and is compatible with a variety of materials. With no coating or surface treatment, this uncoated tool can be used on a broad range of materials and provides an economical alternative to coated tools. The square end shank helps to minimize rotation in the tool holder. This thread forming tap can be used in machines such as drill presses or lathes.

In the Union Butterfield 3306E(UNC) and 3306E(UNF) series, all taps have bottoming chamfers. This tap conforms with ANSI standards and can create threads to a depth 2 ½ times its diameter. It is suitable for the ANSI 2B tolerance class: 2B is an average quality fit for commercial and industrial fasteners.

Taps produce internal threads in previously formed holes and can be used in machines (such as drill presses) or with hand tools. Common types of taps include hand taps, spiral point taps, spiral flute taps, thread forming taps, and pipe taps. High-speed steel (HSS) is a common general-purpose steel for cutting tools and is compatible with a variety of materials. With no coating or surface treatment, this uncoated tool can be used on a broad range of materials and provide an economical alternative to coated tools. The square end shank helps to minimize rotation in the tool holder. This thread forming tap can be used in machines such as drill presses or lathes.

Union Butterfield 3300(UNC) and 3300(UNF) taps are available with a variety of chamfers. This tap conforms with ANSI standards and can create threads to a depth 2 ½ times its diameter. It is suitable for ANSI 2B and 3B tolerance classes: 2B is an average quality fit for commercial and industrial fasteners; 3B produces close-tolerance fasteners that resist loosening, as in aerospace applications.

The Dormer MTT-X E029/MTT-X E039 powdered-metal steel thread forming tap has a round shank with a square end, titanium nitride (TiN) coating, and lubricant grooves, and is used for cold-forming right-hand threads in ductile materials such as steel, stainless steel, titanium, nickel, and aluminum. It is available in two different ANSI thread specification standards: UNC (Unified Coarse) and UNF (Unified Fine). It is suitable for threading through holes (extending through the workpiece) and blind or bottoming holes (with only one opening). The TiN ceramic coating combines hardness and low friction to extend the life of the tap, as well as to permit faster cutting speeds than with uncoated taps. The lubricant grooves on this thread forming tap create paths for coolant and lubricant to reach the taper threads of the chamfer, where forming occurs. The tap’s modified bottoming chamfer has additional length to reduce chip load, adds tool life in difficult-to-machine materials, and permits higher tapping speeds.

In the Dormer MTT-X E029/ MTT-X E039 series, taps are designed with varying numbers of lubricant grooves depending upon size. All taps in this series have modified bottoming chamfers. This tap conforms to ANSI standards and can create threads to a depth two-and-a-half times its diameter. Taps in this series are suitable for the ANSI 2B tolerance class: 2B is an average quality fit for commercial and industrial fasteners.

Taps produce internal threads in previously formed holes and can be used in machines (such as drill presses) or with hand tools. Thread Forming Taps

Vermont CNC Forming Taps are designed to form threads by material displacement. This process results in numerous tapping advantages: greater tap strength, especially in smaller tap sizes; potentially greater fastener strength; and elimination of chip disposal. CNC Forming Taps have been designed with straight lobes and oil grooves (#5, M3 and larger). They can be used to advantage in soft, ductile materials (25Rc or less). They are manufactured with closely controlled dimensions for fast, repeatable tool changes and therefore are well suited for use on CNC equipment.
